The Sir John Leng Trust, or “The Leng Medal” as it is known by many Dundonians, is embedded in the musical history of the City.

Every year, each school in Dundee, and the immediate surrounding areas, hold a Silver Medal competition for the solo singing of Scots songs by their pupils.  The winners of the Silver Medal competition can compete in the Gold Medal competition which is held annually in late spring.

The Trust and its competitions have been going on for a little over one hundred years. Sir John Leng had wanted to encourage and promote the teaching of the Songs of Scotland. At that time he may well have thought that there was insufficient interest in or awareness of the immense musical archive of Scots songs, written by Robert Burns and others. That sentiment is still held but the fondly remembered “Leng Medal” continues to play a part in maintaining and fostering that rich history.

Please look at the history page for a more detailed story of the Trust.
